I sat criss-cross on the bed, staring aimlessly out the window as I listened to everyone moving around the house. My elbows dug into my legs; they had finally started to get sore after two hours of not moving. I blinked away the tears that had been welling up since I’d found out about my mom, then shut my eyes.

Somewhere in the house, Ryan was ribbing Jack about a guy in town he thought was cute.

“Shut up,” Jack hissed. They sounded like they were in the living room.

The swish of fabric was grating my ears. Whoever was rummaging through their clothes was about to lose a limb. Maybe two. I ground my teeth and tried to concentrate on reigning in my senses. Denise had shown me a few different techniques to ground myself, but none of them were working today.

Everything was so much more than usual. It was like I was back to the newbie I’d been when I’d first transitioned. My heart hurt so bad I could feel the emotional numbness creeping in, but the physical world was so sharp and in-focus that I wanted to scream. The two extremes warring with one another was enough to drive me insane.

I focused on ignoring the footsteps coming down the hall. The light tapping on my door was jarring. I groaned but otherwise didn’t respond to the intruder.

Kade’s scent hit me before he even entered the room.

“Are you alright, darlin’?” he whispered as he approached.

I peeled my eyes open, staring blankly at him. A duffle bag hung from his hand; a pair of my shoes peeked out of the bag. Black sneakers with green bottoms and green laces, my favorite pair.

Kade’s mouth ticked up in a half-hearted smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. His hand rose to my cheek as he knelt in front of me, at the edge of the bed.

“Talk to me, darlin’.”

“I can’t,” I sighed. I wiped the back of my hand across my eyes, smearing tears across my face. “It’s too much. Everything’s loud, and everything hurts. I can’t deal with this.”

Kade braced his hands on either side of my knees, forcing me to meet his gaze. His dark blue human eyes sparked with gold at the center; Beast was watching.

“You can. You’re gonna make it through this.”

“How can you say that?”

“Because you’re strong, Liza. You didn’t pick easy mates, and you ain’t had an easy life. You’re strong. You’ll make it through this and anythin’ else that gets thrown at ya.”

I sniffled and wiped my nose on my hoodie sleeve, refusing to meet his eyes. I couldn’t answer him right then. I wasn’t the strong woman he thought I was; I didn’t deserve his faith. Everything inside me was divided into two equal parts. Half of me wanted to hunt Jonathan down like a dog and get justice for my mom; the other half wanted to crawl into a dark corner and hide for the rest of forever.

Kade sighed and stood. He walked through the room, throwing clothes into the duffle bag.
